I give the author credit for complex plotting, but overall the book fell short. The cop scenes read like they were written by someone who watches too much TV (I have since found out the author writes for TV so maybe that explains it). The Natty scenes were interesting in showing how war experience can be a problem in civilian life but I felt it was often overdone. The characters all have dark pasts and internal demons. It didn't really hang together for me, but I did finish it and it raised some interesting issues. I've read earlier books by this author and liked them very much. Having witnessed and maybe participated in the atrocities of war time prisoner interrogations has caught up to Natty, short for Nathaniel. Suffering panic attacks, blackouts, and mixed feelings about issues on the home front leads to his involvement in issues his lawyer father was litigating and possibly murdered for. Enter an over eager local Latina police officer and at the same time enter the ever-eager FBI against whom the lawsuit was filed. An array of characters appear at various intervals as witnesses seem to die before trial, seemingly orchestrated by Natty’s deceased father’s law partner. A story that seems to meander at times as Natty gets lost in mental ruminations, caught up in the “what ifs” of his past and present. An ending that leaves some unanswered questions also leaves an unsatisfied reader.
Average at best!
PI found the book intriguing because of the ptsd suffered by the Army LT who shot a child in Iraq. He never got over it. What I liked least is that he got away with murder. There was good character development. The opening war scene was very realistic.
I was so looking forward to a female detective story. The characterization was rote and Robles never was fleshed out. She was always looking to her partner or some other man to show her the way.
Enjoyed this book enormously although the first chapter sort of put me off; a little too hurtful. But then the story takes off and I was totally hooked. I look forward to reading the next Lourdes Robles story. Once again, Great Read!

It's okay. I did not find any of the characters very compelling. I finished the book but won't be going back for more of the series.
