Every Stella Starling romance can be read as a standalone and takes place in the same interconnected, contemporary world. Ready For Love is the first book in the Semper Fi series, which is a spin off from At Last, The Beloved Series.

Like many of us I am getting a bit leery of gay-for-you themed books, especially ones where friends get to have benefits but no commitments. The key to making a book of this genre successful is the two characters: If one of them is unsympathetic, everything falls apart.

That's why this one caught me from the first page: Jake is a totally credible openly gay flight attendant, not flamboyant or flighty but definitely identifiable as gay. Gabe the Marine, on the other hand, is straight but not one of those who appears to be looking for a woman in every bar whenever he returns from deployment. Both of them have commitment issues for very different reasons, which are credible and open the door for a friendship that moves into more "hands on" experiences as the plot moves on.

There are so many little twists and turns here, especially with the very well drawn (and sometimes frustrating) supporting characters, many of whom appeared in a previous series by the author which I have not read at this point (but I will).

The central problem in any of these books--how the gay guy deals with the frustration of going from crush to love, and how the straight guy crosses the line while resisting that journey every step--is handled beautifully by the author's lovely language and very good sense of humor.

These two guys are real. They are unique in their own ways, and their passions and inner feelings are there on every page of the alternating POV chapters. Cannot recommend it more highly, and I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series. Bravo!

The book had 286 pages or 3803 locations on my kindle. The book was about 2 good friends, Jake and Gabe. Gabe was a 29 year old military man, who avoided commitment. Jake aka Jakey aka petal was a 25 year old gay flight attendant, who was looking for love. The book contained a few decent anal sex scenes, a couple of glossed over blow jobs and lots of kisses. I liked the men. Jake was kind, caring and besotted by Gabe. Gabe was possessive, jealous and obsessed with Jake. I wanted Gabe to struggle more with his sexuality, instead of saying, hey I never been with a man, but lets be friends with benefits. I also wanted more detailed sex scenes and I definitely wanted some morning after pillow talk. The intimate moments between the men, just moved a little too quickly for my tastes. Overall a decent book, couldn't quite give it a 4, but definitely better than just a 3.
This book took me completely by surprise and I loved every word. Jake and Gabe are such original characters that the usual trope of friends-to-lovers is anything but in this story.

Gabe and Jake grew up in the same neighborhood and Jake always hung around Gabe and his brothers. But Gabe enlisted in the Marines and Jake became a flight attendant and renewed their friendship only seven months before the story truly starts.

After going out one night, Gabe realizes that his friendship with Jake might have changed and he hated the fact that Jake stopped talking to him. Thinking he needed to find a date to get his head back on straight. But he wasn't interested in his date. He was interested in Jake.

Knowing he wouldn't be able to stay away from the man he couldn't out of his mind, he suggests friends with benefits situation and falls completely under Jake's spell.

I loved the development of Jake and Gabe's relationship. Gabe, before he understood what his feelings were, understood subconsciously that he needed Jake more than he thought he did. As they slowly fall in love and their lives become intertwined in ways that are sweet and caring, you can't help but cry and laugh along with the two of them as they work out that they need each other.
Before I write why I loved Ready for Love so much, I want to start by explaining how I knew I would love it, before I ever read the first word, aside from the fact that this author has not written a single story that I haven't loved. After meeting Gabe and Jake in The Beloved Series, really getting to know these "side" characters a bit more in Be Loved - the third book in that series, I was left wanting... no... craving more! Seeing Gabe's straight boy mentality (not mannerisms because... cough... cough... denial!), his use of cutesy nicknames, and his playful interactions with everyone was like dangling a piece of yarn in front of this curious kitty. Add sweet Jake into the mix! While it's not necessary to read Be Loved to "get" Ready for Love, as it stands alone, it will enhance the characters and you'll see why I love them so much. Anyway, Jake's past relationship experiences had me yearning (and yes, begging) for him to get his own happily ever after. But alas, that was the last book in the series.

Then, this brilliant author, Stella Starling, came galloping in on a white horse... Okay, maybe that's a bit dramatic, but it felt that way because this author exceeded my expectations. I was hoping for an extra book, but got a whole new series!

This new Semper Fi series features Gabe and Jake in the first book, Ready for Love! Woohoo! The Marine and the flight attendant. I love these guys! The author took the characters I had gotten to know a bit in the previous series and enhanced them, giving them their own well-rounded story without sacrificing the characters' personalities that drew me to them from the start. This book had drama, serious heartwrenching moments, humor, and um, hello... (have you read a book by this author?)... smoking hot scenes! Don't read it when you're anywhere you don't want someone to see you blushing!

I'm so excited for this new Semper Fi Series. If you haven't already read The Beloved Series, then I highly recommend it to read the stories of characters who have cameos in the Semper Fi Series.
