#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Alex Delaware and LAPD detective Milo Sturgis investigate the death of Alex’s most mysterious patient to date in the sensational new thriller from the master of suspense, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Kellerman.
At nearly one hundred years old, Thalia Mars is a far cry from the patients that child psychologist Alex Delaware normally treats. But the charming, witty woman convinces Alex to meet with her in a suite at the Aventura, a luxury hotel with a checkered history.
What Thalia wants from Alex are answers to unsettling questions—about guilt, patterns of criminal behavior, victim selection. When Alex asks the reason for her morbid fascination, Thalia promises to tell all during their next session. But when he shows up the following morning, he is met with silence Thalia is dead in her room.
When questions arise about how Thalia perished, Alex and homicide detective Milo Sturgis must peel back the layers of a fascinating but elusive woman’s life and embark on one of the most baffling investigations either of them has ever experienced. For Thalia Mars is a victim like no other, an enigma who harbored nearly a century of secrets and whose life and death draw those around her into a vortex of violence.
Heartbreak Hotel is classic Delaware and classic Kellerman.

Heartbreak Hotel An Alex Delaware Novel eBook Jonathan Kellerman
This book is, if I am counting correctly, the 32nd book in the Alex Delaware series. I have read most, if not all of them (after all this time it's a little hard to keep track of them all). This book assumes that the reader is extremely familiar with the main characters -- Milo Sturgis, Alex Delaware, and Alex's girlfriend Robin Castagna. There is very little background on the characters, and how Milo and Alex started working together, what Alex's professional background is, what Milo's relationship is, or what Robin does for a living. If you don't already know this before starting the book, you won't learn much of it by reading this book. As a long-time reader of the series, I am glad the author doesn't spend a lot of the book catching new readers up with the characters. But for this reason, it is important to have read at least some of the earlier books in the series before reading this book or you will miss a lot of subtext.I enjoy this series and these characters so I am inclined to enjoy the books in the series. This was not my favorite book in the series, but it kept my attention the entire way through and the farther I read in the book, the more I liked the story. The pace was a little slower, especially at the beginning, than in many of the books. Unlike most of the others, Milo doesn't initiate the action in this book with a murder case for Alex to consult on. Alex has a meeting with an older patient (odd because he is a child psychologist), which leads to him calling Milo in to investigate. And unlike some of the other books in the series, there is more methodical investigating (i.e. mystery) and less chasing around being in danger (i.e. thriller). I enjoyed watching the investigation unfold as Milo and Alex pursue various leads to learn who killed the victim.
It is nice to know that after so many books in the series, the author can still write a story that keeps my attention and makes for an enjoyable mystery.
If you are a fan of the series, I think this is a book you will enjoy.

Heartbreak Hotel An Alex Delaware Novel eBook Jonathan Kellerman Reviews
Jonathan Kellerman is probably my favorite living author, but I have found some of his recent books disappointing. With this one, however, he's back in form. Heartbreak Hotel deals with the murder of a very wealthy woman approaching her hundredth birthday. Investigating her death, Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis learned that she had had an extremely colorful life, which included a love affair with a gangster and a possible connection with missing jewels from a robbery many years earlier. The recent Kellerman books that I considered below par were slow getting started, with some hundred pages before any crime occurred. In this one, the first victim dies on page 23, and virtually all the book deals with the investigation of her death and ultimately several others. I found the story fast-moving and absorbing, and I'm always happy to reconnect with Alex and Milo. If anyone gave up on Jonathan Kellerman after reading Breakdown, Motive, or Killer, now is the time to come back. And if you've never read him, you can always start here.
I have been a huge fan of JK and his characters, Dr. Delaware and Milo, but this book is just so disappointing. I usually cannot put down a book, once started, but I have to force myself to pick this one back up. I am really not sure I can force through to the end. Boring story, no characters I can like or relate to, boring descriptions of LA and gangsters from the past, stilted dialogue between Alex and Milo, wretched descriptions of rape and violence, with no purpose I can see. Even if I find out who did it, I don't think I will care. The only character who had potential was killed in the first pages. I won't be getting the next book...sorry to say goodbye to Alex and Milo.
I'm a long time Alex and Milo fan but this book was a total bust for me. Tedious and slow thru the middle with too many names and characters.
Save your money on this one.
Kellerman has again written a highly entertaining, well written tale based on the interactions between his usual protagonists. Is it great literature? Of course not, but it's a fun read, an excellent story, with plenty of evolving twists and turns, and an excellent way to spend a couple of hours.
I love this series having read every one of the books in it but the previous book and this new one both seem cut and dry. The banter between Alex and Milo is there but it's cold and flat. The whole story is flat. This almost reads like an outline waiting to get fleshed out and developed. Usually I finish these books in one day two days tops but this one I read a chapter and put it aside struggling to stay with it, then struggling to pick it up again. It's just so disjointed. I didn't want to give it two stars but I really had no choice. This is not his best and I'm hoping the next one will be better because I really would hate to lose these characters and author.
