Sweetbriar Cottage is a story to fall in love with. True-to-life characters, high stakes, and powerful chemistry blend to tell an emotional story of reconciliation.” —Brenda Novak, New York Times bestselling author

When Noah and Josephine discover their divorce was never actually finalized, their lives are turned upside down.

Following his divorce, Noah gave up his dream job and settled at a remote horse ranch in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Georgia, putting much-needed distance between himself and the former love of his life. But then Noah gets a letter from the IRS claiming he and Josephine are still married. When he confronts Josephine, they discover that she missed the final step in filing the paperwork and they are, in fact, still married.

Josephine is no happier about the news than Noah. Maybe the failed marriage—and botched divorce—was her fault, but her heart was shattered right alongside his, more than he would ever believe. The sooner they put this marriage behind them, the better for both of their sakes.

But when Josephine delivers the final paperwork to his ranch, the two become stranded in his cottage during the worst spring snowstorm in a decade. Being trapped with Josephine is a test of Noah’s endurance. He wrestles with resentment and an unmistakable pull to his wife—still beautiful, still brave, and still more intriguing than any woman he’s ever known.

As they find themselves confronted with each other and their shared past, old wounds surface and tempers flare. But when they are forced out into the storm, they must rely on each other in a way they never have before. Josephine finally opens up about her tragic past, and Noah realizes she’s never been loved unconditionally by anyone—including him. Will Noah accept the challenge to pursue Josephine’s heart? And can she finally find the courage to trust Noah?

Sweetbriar Cottage is a wonderful story, full of emotional tension and evocative prose.” —Francine Rivers, New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love

Sweetbriar Cottage Denise Hunter 9780718090487 Books

Denise Hunter's powerful writing skills are on full display in her latest book, Sweetbriar Cottage. It has the feel, however loosely, of a contemporary retelling of the biblical redemption story of Hosea and Gomer, a loving husband dealing with a wayward wife whose actions unwittingly destroys their marriage.

The complex characters of Noah and Josie are very realistic, the pain and damage of their divorce relatable and their subsequent attraction and chemistry while working through some serious circumstances totally believable.

Hunter deals with issues of self-worth, unworthiness, bitterness and betrayal with a deft hand and an understanding of how healing can come through forgiveness. Sweetbriar Cottage is an emotional read, one that left me touched by everything Noah and Josie experienced on their journey to rediscovering the love that was there all along.

Hunter is one of the best writers when it comes to telling a romantic story full of captivating and swoon-worthy moments. This is one of my favorite books I've read this year. I'll be the first one in line for a return visit to Copper Creek when Blue Ridge Sunrise releases in November.

Sweetbriar Cottage Denise Hunter 9780718090487 Books Reviews

4.5 Stars
I found myself captured, rather quickly, in this story. Wondering what led to the demise of this marriage, and then why? Hunter reveals the why's and how's gradually, through the current circumstances but also through flashbacks. (Note I did notice one typo while reading. The time line for the flashback in Chapter 17 was wrong.)

This is the first stand alone novel that Hunter has done, and is different from her previous novels in other ways too. Our heroine is far from perfect; she has a rough past, some of which was out of her control, but how she dealt with this was in an unhealthy way. While, her husband seems pretty close to perfect we all know that no one is. I loved seeing him work through his anger, coming to forgiveness and even some other revelations along the way.

I really was glued till the end. And while this is not a warm, sweet story, but a journey through pain and into growth in several ways, including faith. There were some sweet moments, moving moments especially towards the last quarter of the novel.
I highly recommend this book---any book, really, by this author. She never disappoints. This story was very realistic, the characters 3 - dimensional, the scenes palpable. Well-written in every way. The takeaway for me So often
we look at people's behavior and judge them
without taking the time to consider the motives and, many times, the hurt behind what drives them to do the things they do. Josie and Noah's story is such a redemptive story of how grace, forgiveness, and love has the power to heal the brokeness in our lives---first through Jesus Christ, then from others. Great spiritual truths in this story, but it doesn't come across preachy or stiff in any way. It's a wonderful read and we'll worth the investment of your time and money.
Be still my heart....one of my favorite romance types are about married couples or shall I say former married couples. I read Denise's love of this story and how close to her heart it became and I just want to let her know and everyone else...I felt.it girl, everything you hope your readers would feel about these complex characters and their story, I felt. You nailed it! I have to admit Josephine took me some time to....warm up to and understand. Noah, oh Noah, what a man. I have to admit a disclaimer if you will, give me an Alpha Christian male and you've got my dream guy right there and that is exactly what I thought of Noah. I always enjoy how Denise seems to bring you right into the hearts of her characters and the emotions churning in them is just so realistic and makes her characters come to life and I can't help but cheer them on.

Again, sadly in our current culture discussing the sanctity of marriage and especially supporting couples that may be struggling is not really discussed but rather there is more talk and support once a marriage has dissolved and that is just sad in my opinion. So, thank you Denise for taking us on this journey. And what a journey!
This was yet another absolutely wonderful book by Denise Hunter! The majority of the book happens in the span of a few days, yet Denise masterfully makes Sweetbriar Cottage a riveting read as she plays into the characters deep emotions and feelings for each other. The romance illustrated on the page is sweet and deep.

Even though Josephine could be an unlikable and unrelatable character, as she has a sordid past, she is both likable and relatable from page one. That sordid past is integral to not only the events happening, but to her current spiritual life.

Funny story about this novel I pre-purchased this novel back in March, but chose to read and review the ARC instead because she is such an amazing author and the storyline sounded so intriguing. Let me tell you, it was worth it! So, yes, I did receive this book in exchange for a review, but the thoughts in this review wholeheartedly represent my views and mine alone. Just got my real copy on the release day (June 12, 2017), think I might read Sweetbriar Cottage again!
