From acclaimed author Camille Pagán comes a wry, heartfelt exploration of love and loss.
When struggling novelist James Hernandez meets poet Louisa “Lou” Bell, he’s sure he’s just found the love of his life. There’s just one problem she’s engaged to his oldest friend, Rob. So James toasts their union and swallows his desire.
As the years pass, James’s dreams always seem just out of reach—he can’t finish that novel, can’t mend his relationship with his father, can’t fully commit to a romantic relationship. He just can’t move on. But after betrayal fractures Lou’s once-solid marriage, she turns to James for comfort.
When Lou and James act on their long-standing mutual attraction, the consequences are more heartbreaking—and miraculous—than either of them could have ever anticipated. Then life throws James one more curveball, and he, Rob, and Lou are forced to come to terms with the unexpected ways in which love and loss are intertwined.

I was eagerly anticipating this book as I really enjoyed Ms. Pagan's book, Life and Other Near Death Experiences. I was hoping this novel would offer me the same sort of escape that I was desperately needing due to some recent current events. I was not disappointed! I was only sad I finished it in two days. I was instantly drawn into the flawed, hopeful, and at times hopeless, world of the protagonist, James. We have all at one point or another felt the longing for something we could not have. The balance of being thrilled for our friends success and happiness while also feeling a little jealous that it was not our own. That is what I think makes this such a wonderful, relatable story. Without giving too much away, James is in love with his best friend's wife. While I have never been in love with someone else's significant other, I have, at times, wanted something someone else had. Knowing how that felt, allowed me to understand how James could allow himself to fall so hard for Lu. In the course of their relationship from girlfriend of best friend, to wife of best friend, to friend, to.... (You will have to read to find out!), I was rooting for everyone to find the happiness and life they deserved. I laughed a little. I cried A LOT!!!! The author does a wonderful job of creating real life scenarios with real life consequences. Life is not all roses, blue skies, and happy endings and I don't want my books to be either. If you enjoy fiction that is the perfect balance of entertaining escapism with a sprinkling of realism, this is the book for you.Tags : Forever is the Worst Long Time: A Novel - Kindle edition by Camille Pagán. Forever is the Worst Long Time A Novel edition by Camille Pagán Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Beautifully written and great character development. Avoids the typical sappy conclusions which makes it feel more real. I look forward to more from this author.
As a fan of Pagan’s other novels I read "Forever is the Worst Long Time" as soon as I could get my hands on it and was not disappointed. I found myself drawn into James Hernandez’s story from the first chapter. His journey left me with a greater appreciation for love and life. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read that you’ll be drawn into and not able to put down.
Beautifully written story of love and loss and everything in-between. As much a story of freindship as the heartbreak of love. I will absolutely read this author again.
Another 5 star read for me from Camille Pagán. Her novels never fail to hit an emotional chord in me and this one was no different. A story involving complex relationships and great characters. Characters who didn't necessarily do the right things or things I approved of but I still found myself liking them. By the end of this book I was in tears. I cared so much what happened to the people inhabiting this novel.
I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Timothy Andres Pabon. I've never listened to him before but he has a wonderful reading voice and he brought all the proper emotional tones to this story. Excellent and highly recommended for those who love women's fiction!
From the very first page of FOREVER IS THE WORST LONG TIME, the reader is drawn into this 'un-put-downable' story of friendship, love and loss, trust and betrayal, redemption and reconciliation.
Camille Noe Pagan writes with an authority and compassionate understanding of the human condition, weaving a rich narrative with a cast of multi-dimensional, layered characters to create a truly compelling read.
James -the dreamer, Rob- the fatalist, Lou- the poet and woman who loved too well... this trio of friends and lovers is beautifully, almost heart-breakingly, real... are "center-stage" in this 'drame de l'amour'.
Camille's characters are brilliantly written, flawed with a 'human-ness' that makes them relatable on so many levels to the reader. As their story unfolds - told through the voice of James, with an honesty that is both open and at times brutal, imbued with a wisdom that belies the age of the narrator... the characters' "layers" are revealed, pulling the reader through a range of emotions... love, hate, despair, hope... to an ending that will have the reader reaching for a box of tissues.
Again.
"Every event is different to those who have lived it, those who have witnessed it, and those who only later read of it." This is one of my favorite lines in the book.
James only ever wanted to write a novel... something important. That was his dream. But from the first moment his eyes settle on his best friend's fiancée, that dream begins to unravel.
Lou is a woman who loves too well and when the man she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life with betrays her love, Lou's heart finds a safe harbor in James... Jim, as she calls him. It suits him better than James, she told him when they first met. Jim, already hopelessly smitten and deeply conflicted, falls the rest of the way in love with Lou. It's a short fall.
Neither know it yet, but their lives will be irrevocably changed.
Rob is undeserving of Lou. On every level. He sees betrayal as an absolute and the truth as shades of grey. He plays the role of the "wronged", ironically unaware of his own duplicity.
We all make choices. And there are often consequences that we are not prepared to deal with. But deal with we must.
James, Lou, and Rob find their lives turned upside down and inside out as they grapple with the choices they have made and the choices they will make. They too will eventually have to deal with the consequences of their actions.
More than anything else, FOREVER IS THE WORST LONG TIME is a story of hope. It is a story of human frailty, of needs and desires and compromises and an uncertain future.
Love can come in a heartbeat. And end even faster.
Love can also be a long, slow "fall".
One that can last a lifetime.
Thank you.

James Hernandez has been in love with Lou since the first time he saw her; but she is engaged to his lifelong best friend, Rob. When Lou's and Rob's marriage begins to unravel, James makes a fateful decision that will impact all of their lives, destroying friendships even as James experiences the best part of his life. This book is written as a journal, with James writing to his daughter, Emerson. What an emotional journey this book takes us on! The characters in this book are so real, so filled with love, angst, regret...all the things that make us human. Such a beautiful, heart wrenching story of love and loss, and living our lives the best way we can. Absolutely gorgeous prose that took my breath away, made my heart flutter with love, and shattered me to my core.
