A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It’s not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher’s new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager’s city.

If they succeed, rewards and pardons await, but that requires a long journey through enemy territory, directly into the capital. It also requires them to refrain from killing each other along the way! At turns darkly comic and touching, Clockwork Boys puts together a broken group of people trying to make the most of the rest of their lives as they drive forward on their suicide mission.

Clockwork Boys Clocktaur War Book 1 eBook T Kingfisher

So far this is a far more generic fantasy adventure that anything I've read from Vernon/Kingfisher before. There aren't even any talking birds! It feels different than her other work, more adult, as apposed to the dreamlike whimsy of her fairy tales and talking animals.

The first half has a lot of cliche interacations, but once they get going it gets a lot better. I like the characters. I doubt I will ever get tired of her sensible, competent, and not particularly beautiful leading ladies, and Slate is another from this mold.

This book isn't exactly a cliffhanger, but it does leave the story very unfinished. If you hate being left hanging, you might want to wait for the next one before you read this one. Buy it now though, so Ursula knows we want to read the next one!

Clockwork Boys Clocktaur War Book 1 eBook T Kingfisher Reviews

This is my review for Clockwork and Wonder Engine. I will copy and paste the review for Wonder Engine. This story is terrific. The characters are vibrant and alive. It is as though each character has his/her own writer. Usually, characters are similar because they have the same author. Not this story! Ms. Kingfisher has many voices!!! To my delight, fell in love with these characters. I am hoping there will be more in this series with these characters. And, hopefully, there is a way for Brenner to get out of his predicament. If I were asked what genre is this book, I would say steampunk, possibly? It is definitely in the fantasy, science fiction realm with a couple of twists. With the right casting and special effects, this could be a blockbuster movie. Some reviews had stated there is some corniness/cheesiness (sp?) to the story. Yes! all the best books and movies have corniness/cheesiness. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Avatar.... It works in this story beautifully. The books are an easy, enjoyable read. A couple of reviews complained about predictability. Right. Like there was nothing predictable in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Avatar, some predictibality does not have to be bad. I find it exhausting sometimes when an author tries NOT to be predictable. The best part of these books is laughter. I found that as I read, I was laughing, out loud.
I enjoyed this so much. Slate, the ninja accountant who is allergic to everything, teams up with Caliban, a fallen paladin with a slight demon problem; Brenner, an assassin; and Learned Edmund, a 19-year-old, very sheltered scholar/monk are sent on a mission to find out how to defeat the Clockwork Boys, an unstoppable army of creepy steampunkish automatons. Or are they monsters? The last two teams might be able to tell them, but alas, they never came back, so Slate et al will have to do it themselves (on pain of terrible death.)

While this book has something in common with a typical quest story, the magic is refreshingly different, and the group dynamics completely make the book. These are people who've been forced together and sometime butt up against each other in the worst ways, but also people who find things to admire in each other, even when they might have initially thought it was impossible. There's a lot of humor, sometimes dark, and the characters all feel very human (even those that aren't.)

My only possible complaint is that the ending is a little abrupt, and leaves a lot hanging, but given that this is a duology, that complaint is probably going to be a feature once I have both books at hand and can just dive right into the second. "It left me wanting more!" is a good feeling to have at the end of a book. Luckily, the wait to part two isn't very long.
I have purchased enjoyed all of the author's books under the T. Kingfisher pseudonym and this time around is no exception. The Clockwork Boys is much more adult than the authors last book Summer in Orcus, (nothing wrong with that, just an observation) and has a little bit of "language" & more mature themes. The story is set in a more traditional late Middle Ages European setting and as always she delivers a great story. I really enjoyed the character development & dynamics between the strong female character and her male team members. I am a male reader, but really enjoy a well written female lead and in this tale Ms. Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher) makes Slate strong without being overbearing. How she manages to pack so much story and character arc in such a small space is a case of constant wonder to me.
The only downside is this is book 1 of 2, so I have to wait for the second half!!!
Kingfisher explains at the end of book how she wrote this in a dark time. Because of that you can really see the struggle she was going through within the story. Bleak outlooks and languishing plot lines are broken up by quips and witty phrases that the characters (and the author) use to cope. I love the idea of a ninja accountant who is allergic to major plot points, but I felt like this book was a chore for all involved and lacked direction; I could barely finish it. Italicized thoughts were overused and it snuffed out my excitement for reading. I have no interest in the next part; I feel like it could have been more focused into one book. Kingfisher had a passion for the characters, and I'm glad she wrote it, but I do not recommend this for anyone who's first book from this author will be this one. I loved the Raven and the Reindeer so start with something like that and give this one a pass until you fall in love with her other writings. I would not recommend to my friends unless they are already fans of Kingfisher.
