What could a 16-year old girl do with an airship?

As a an ordinary farmgirl, Zaira von Monocle is in way over her head. She’s inheriting Rislandia’s most deadly weapon of war, the airship Liliana. Her modest life couldn’t prepare her for flying the massive vessel, let alone protecting her ship and homeland from invading Wyranth soldiers.

Even as her whole world turns upside down from war, Zaira learns her presumed-dead adventurer father, the legendary Baron von Monocle, might still be alive. It’s up to her to take the Liliana into Wyranth territory and see if the rumors are true.

Can Zaira learn how to command an airship and gain the respect of her new crew? Read For Steam And Country, CLFA Book of the Year Award winner and first book in this #1 Bestselling YA Steampunk series!

Steampunk and airships? Go on...

Zaira von Monocle (just go with it, it sounds like a parody surname but it’s serious) has grown up in the shadow of her father, the famous Baron von Monocle, hero of the kingdom of Rislandia, whose adventures on the airship Liliana are already the stuff of legend.

When the baron is missing in action and presumed dead, young Zaira finds herself heir to the legendary airship and an elite but wearied and discouraged crew. It’s a responsibility she is nowhere close to qualified for, but with the armies of the invading Wyrath empire on her doorstep and news of a desperate mission that must be undertaken, she must grow into her father’s mantle quickly.

The strongest element by far in Del Arroz’s book is the main character. Zaira’s missteps are believable and make her triumphs all the more satisfying. She is far from a Mary Sue: although she plays a pivotal role in the story, it’s the teamwork of all the cast that made victory possible.

But the end leaves you wanting more, particularly considering the revelations and questions raised. While it’s got a good ratio of steampunk contraptions to eldritch abominations, I request more of both for the sequel.

For Steam and Country Book One of the Adventures of Baron Von Monocle eBook Jon Del Arroz Reviews

First and foremost, this was mostly quite an enjoyable read. The characters were engaging and very distinct for the most part. The story, while straightforward, kept my attention and kept me wanting to know what happened next. Now for some hopefully constructive criticism.

- The book needed a professional editor, badly. Misused words (wretch instead of retch), poor grammar choices and too-flowery descriptions threw me out of the story more often than should be.
- It seemed there was supposed to be some adolescent sexual tension between two characters that never had any tension at all.
- There was a lack of real emotion in general. Young people fresh off the farm should really react much more strongly to their first exposure to violent death, much less to having inflicted same.
- And finally, there was too much leaning on luck for believability.

That said, I'd probably enjoy seeing a second book in this 'verse.
If you, like me love films like 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hood or the Horatio Hornblower novels you will feel right at home with this piece of fast-paced steampunk adventure. The descriptions are entertaining in and over themselves and carry along threw this fantasy adventure at a brisk pace give you a good look at all the likable and well-developed characters, I will not give away spoilers but this is grounded fantasy adventure that features the best lead I have seen in a book of this type in years and a few twists I didn't see coming, it is just long enough to tell its story but not too long, it doesn't drag at all, a problem I have with a lot of modern books where I feel they are sometimes just trying to fill a certain number of pages no matter what, it tells its story and then is done.

If you are looking for something dark or that deconstructs the genre of steampunk action adventure you will not find it here, so this may not be for everyone as some may find it a bit too silly, but for those of us who remember reading of adventurous heroes coming of age in a time full of wonder and where the world was filled with unknowns and danger, this is a welcome return to what brings joy to all our hearts. I meant it when I compared it to my third favorite film of all time and my second favorite series of books. Still, just because this book draws from the best of the past don't think it is stuck in it, it is a very modern novel that also has some new ideas that I haven't seen anywhere else and the characters were so well drawn I was putting faces and voice to the names right away. If there is one novel I have read in recent years that I would watch a film of this is it.

In short, this is the most enjoyment I have gotten from a work of fiction in a long time and I look forward to reading the other entries in the series and it is well worth picking up for anyone who loves colourful, larger than life adventures with a human touch and relatable characters.

Five Stars!
I generally don't enjoy fantasy... but I do enjoy alternate worlds and while the author describes his work as a fantasy I viewed it as simply another world that's not earth populated by humans. The author does an excellent job of world building through the eyes of the heroine -a young lady, daughter of The Baron. And then it gets interesting. You'll have to read it to find out how interesting but I will say this.... Very interesting. Oh and the calendar system employed by the author is really intriguing and fun! He could write a few chapters just on that!
The writing is exuberant fun and characters are mostly reasonably developed. One character - who plays a pivotal role of deception needed some more. However it's not critical.
This is also a book almost anyone over the age of 12 can sit back with and escape into a fascinating world where earthquakes for instance may not be cause by... the planet. Del Arroz has a vivid imagination and I eagerly am looking for the next book in what may be a series!
Why 4 - not 5 - stars. A (very) Typos, The King and Emperor needed more development as did one other character. (on the other hand that may be taken care of in the next book).
Parents This book is safe to read for 12 and up. I may try get my grandaughter to try it next year because the heroine is really excellent!
