RULES FOR BEING A MAN
Don't Cry; Love Sport; Play Rough; Drink Beer; Don't Talk About Feelings

But Robert Webb has been wondering for some time now are those rules actually any use? To anyone?

Looking back over his life, from schoolboy crushes (on girls and boys) to discovering the power of making people laugh (in the Cambridge Footlights with David Mitchell), and from losing his beloved mother to becoming a husband and father, Robert Webb considers the absurd expectations boys and men have thrust upon them at every stage of life.

Hilarious and heartbreaking, How Not To Be a Boy explores the relationships that made Robert who he is as a man, the lessons we learn as sons and daughters, and the understanding that sometimes you aren't the Luke Skywalker of your life - you're actually Darth Vader.

How Not To Be a Boy eBook Robert Webb

Robert Webb has an incredible ability to navigate complicated and fraught topics in ways that anyone can relate to. I wish I could make everyone who attends my family's thanksgiving listen to this before we have any conversations about anything. Thank you RW.

How Not To Be a Boy eBook Robert Webb Reviews

While it may seem hyperbole to call Robert Webb a genius, anyone who can pull off the tricky work of a first-person camera comedy (the hysterical "Peepshow") and create Numberwang! is damn near it in my book. Speaking of books, this hilarious memoir does not disappoint--it's told in the distinctively self-deprecating comic voice that will be familiar to his many fans, myself included. If you're not already a fan, what are you waiting for?! Pick up the book and start streaming his TV work immediately.

I received an advance copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
An abridged version of this memoir was recently serialised on BBC Radio. I saw the listing, but decided that it probably wouldn't interest me. Then, by chance, I happened to hear one episode - and lo and behold, I was hooked. I immediately went back and played the episodes I'd missed and listened to every episode with great enjoyment. It made me laugh, reflect, and at times find tears welling up in my eyes. I felt disappointed when the broadcasts came to an end. Fortunately, Audible has provided us with the unabridged version of the book. -)
Perhaps because so much of Webb’s upbringing reflected my own references, obsessions and interests – but as a girl – I found this wholly absorbing.
His angle is why masculinity is all messed up and he uses himself as an example. It’s hard to disagree.
Going from early childhood to maturity, we experience the world in present tense through the eyes of young Robert. He progresses from princeling, to adolescent, to adult with sharp self-assessment framed by the background he grew up against.

What does it mean to be a man? Who are your role models? What if you fancy boys as well as girls? What if you’re afraid of your father figure?
This makes the book sound soul-searching and miserable when it is precisely the former and not at all the latter. I laughed aloud so many times and noted great lines, while occasionally dabbing my eyes at the more poignant moments.

This is a grown-up analysis of why we should all be feminists under a personally searching light.
It’s an excellent, thought-provoking read from a very funny writer, who punctures his own ego and addresses how he rejects traditional masculine roles while frequently fulfilling them.
Highly recommended.
Very personal and raw bio from a wonderful man, who is so very hard om himself.
I live in South Africa and have seen one episode of Peep Show in my life - on a Virgin flight to London, so barely knew who Robert Webb was until I read this courageous, funny and poignant memoir. Webb is male version of Caitlin Moran in my mind and a welcome new voice for the anti-gender cause, or however you want to define the 'let's all be free to be fully human' cause. Brilliantly narrated, of course.
Great read, Webb is heartbreakingly honest. Highly recommend for all!
Refreshing look at how gender stereotypes can define and redefine a person's life. Some aspects felt like they were not fully explored, some relationships could have been discussed in greater details. Webb's approach is brave and honest, even if he doesn't always come out as the better person.
Robert Webb has an incredible ability to navigate complicated and fraught topics in ways that anyone can relate to. I wish I could make everyone who attends my family's thanksgiving listen to this before we have any conversations about anything. Thank you RW.
